Travel Challenge November 2008
Can you name this man?
I was born in Washington, D.C., and began my career in the Navy. I surveyed and built a wagon road from New Mexico to California—part of which is still in use.
Later I bought up Mexican land grants, and at one time owned the largest private land holding in California. I also owned a house across from the White House, and at one was D.C.’s most famous host. I was appointed Ambassador by President Grant, and eventually died in Washington, D.C.
However, I am best remembered for my expedition which featured beasts of burden from another continent.
