Travel Challenge September 2008
This month’s challenge will test your knowledge of North American wildlife. The first questions are “True or False” while the final question will require a few words from you.
1. “Consort” is the name given to a group of young Whooping Cranes.
(T or F)
2. The River Otter’s fur is so dense that it has 1 million hairs per square inch. (T or F)
3. Coyotes and Badgers will team up to hunt underground prey. (T or F)
4. Name two animals of the American West whose popular names are misnomers… (Please provide the popular name and the scientific name.)
So friends, remember to be as specific as possible, and good luck!
Instructions: When you think you have figured it out, enter your answers in the comment field below. Be sure to check back next week to see if you were right.

I’ll guess that the first three are true. For no. 4 what comes to mind is the bison, which we mistakenly call a buffalo and the Turkey Vulture which we call a buzzard. I don’t know the scientific names. Karen
1. True
2. Kinda true, but it also depends on what part of the body your measuring from. Did you check the armpits?
3. True
4.
“big foot” – This creatures is actually itty-bitty in comparison to it’s feet, which is how it gets it’s name, not because it has big feet. Perhaps you should make it a part of your travels to look for one. That could be a lifetime of adventure.
Side-hill-gouger – I’m not sure how far east these creatures range. In our travels I have seen some pretty fancy gouges in wheat and cornfields across the mid-west, although some people think aliens did it. I’m also not sure they always travel clockwise since I’ve not had the privilege of seeing one first hand. Perhaps you could also add this to your bucket list of things to find before you stop traveling.
Bottom line, I don’t have an answer to #4. Kathi
Nice quiz! 1 is false, 2 has got to be false, 3 is true in a sense (I’ve never thought the badgers were willing collaborators!), and 4—let’s see, how about Buffalo (=American Bison, Bison bison), Antelope (=Pronghorn, Antilocapra americana), Prairie Dog (=well, big fat ground squirrels that play a critical role in maintaining the diversity of grassland habitats, Cynomys spp).
Safe travels, and see you in Nov!
Rick
