Travel Challenge Answer May 2008
I admit to a bit of omission when crafting this month’s Travel Challenge question. I substituted the term “politician” for that of President or Vice President since I wanted make it more of a challenge. Unfortunately, it made it a bit confusing and I apologize for that. Even with my goof we received two correct responses, congratulations to both Martha and Karen. (Martha is the official winner for getting her answer in first.)
Talk about amazing, President Theodore Roosevelt amassed an impressive list of accomplishments. As a man of boundless energy with a huge array of interests there are a multitude of places in this country where he left a mark. During his Presidency TR set aside an astounding 194 million acres as public land, there are few states that didn’t benefit from his conservation.
Our travels have allowed us to visit and explore some of these treasures, from our recent visit to Muir Woods National Monument, to Lassen Volcanic National Park a couple years ago, to Crater Lake National Park. All places we are thrilled to have preserved and set aside for the enjoyment of future generations.

I can’t leave without tossing in a few more of TR’s first: first President to ride in a car, first President to own a car, first President to go underwater in a submarine, first President to travel abroad (when he went to check on the progress of the Panama Canal), first President to ride in an airplane, first and only President to be awarded the Medal of Honor, and first American to win the Nobel Peace Prize. And last cool fact, TR was responsible for placing President Lincoln’s profile on the penny. All that and he was the youngest President to take office.

Did you know that Roosevelt also tried to rejoin the military so that he could fight in World War I? He was turned down.
Hi Martha,
Thanks for the information. TR was a passionate man and fought in so many ways for the things he believed in. Quite an amazing man!
