Kentucky Horses
These two videos go with our Horsin’ Around in Kentucky post. Both clips are from the Kentucky Horse Park’s “Parade of Breeds” where visitors can watch and learn about a wide variety of horse breeds from around the world.
They typically have two different shows daily—we went to both and were excited to watch and learn. After showing off the horses, the handlers would stand with them for ten minutes afterwards for people to pet the horses, take pictures, and ask questions.
The horse featured in the first video is the Friesian. This beautiful horse is always black, and has wonderful composure. Watch as the handler, Clay Maier, shows off his horse’s abilities in the ring.
The second video shows two Norwegian Fjord horses being “driven”, meaning they are pulling a wagon with riders. Their skill in turning sharply and obeying commands is amazing. Of the two women driving the horses, one is issuing commands and telling the horses when to turn, and the other is using her weight to balance the wagon and help it turn sharply between the obstacles.
It looks slow in the video, but in real life it was very fast-paced. Everyone cheered loudly for the Norwegian Fjords and their handlers when they finished this demonstration.
[UPDATE: I added links to YouTube versions of the videos in case you have trouble with viewing in QuickTime or iTunes.]
How to watch: If your browser has a QuickTime plugin, you can play movies directly in the browser window—use the link to the movie to start. If you don't have the plugin or need more help opening movie files, read our Video Watching Help page.

Can’t view the two videos. The Video Watching Help link shown above “was not found.” Are they in some new format that my computer does not recognize? I ran a plug-in update, but still no success.
Thanks for the note, Russell. The Video Watching Help link is fixed now.
If the QuickTime plugin update listed there doesn’t work for you, let me know and I can post them in a different format.
We loved the Kentucky Horse Park. I hope to take the granddaughters there some day. It is so convenient having the RV park right next door. We saw Fjord ponies in Ashland, Wis. They are amazing, beautiful creatures. Karen
