December 2007 Mystery Photo Revealed
Thank you for all the great guesses for the December 2007 Mystery Photo—congratulations to Debi and Alison their close guesses.
The birds in question (11 of them in the picture below) are from a famous flock. For those of you who may not be familiar, they have their own book and movie, both titled Parrots of Telegraph Hill. The majority of the birds are Cherry-headed Conures, although there have been some Blue-crowned Conures and Mitred Conures spotted in the group at various times.
We came across these parrots in the trees at Villaincourt Fountain near the Embarcadero in downtown San Francisco, California. Our encounter was in early evening in August 2006; there was a small group of people hand-feeding the birds. We did not give them any food, and they did not come to us. Smart birds!
The birds have created quite a controversy for the city; as of June 2007 San Francisco has banned the hand-feeding of the birds in order keep the flock wild and safe.

Darn! That was my first gut reaction but I couldn’t see any cherry heads so I thought you might have come across a flock of green parakeets in Texas. It’s amazing how well they blend in with the surrounding foliage. Thanks for the challenge.
Happy Holidays!
Alison
