Mystery Photo, August 2007: Duckling Count

Filed under: Mystery Photo by Erin on 8/15/2007

This month for the Mystery Photo we thought we’d switch it up a bit. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to count the ducklings. It’s not as easy as you might think. Bonus points go to the person who also correctly identifies the type of duck. Good luck!

The results: We will not post comments until next Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007. That gives everyone a chance to guess. That day we will post your guesses in the order they were received and reveal the correct answer.

[UPDATE: The winner(s) are revealed. There were 11 ducklings in the photo.]

Ducklings! They’re ducklings! Oh… you want us to count them? And here I was all excited because I could finally figure out what animal it was. And they ARE cute little ducklings this time! ; ) Hmmm… I count 9 plus mama. Are they wood ducks? (I know… silly me, but I gotta at least TRY for the bonus points!)

  3. Aaron says...

I’m counting ten little ducklings and I’ll throw a wild guess based on my “how to identify ducks” google search and say they are wood ducks.

Nice mixing it up on this one.

  4. Martha Retallick says...

Looks like 8 baby mallards in that photo.

  5. Karen Bergmark says...

I am guessing 7 chicks and Rich says 9. We believe that it is a mallard hen. Karen B

  6. Susan Totman says...

I count nine ducklings. Species I believe is mallard.

  7. Leah says...

O.K., I admit it! I’m not sure I have a clue, but I’m going to say it’s a Pintail Duck with 7 ducklings.

  8. Leah says...

Wait! Should I have said Yellow-Billed Pintail?

  9. Alison Taylor says...

I’m going to guess 11 ducklings.

  10. Michael Rush says...

I’ll go with 9 little mallard ducklings. I can’t tell whether that spot under the mom’s bill is another one or just a similar-colored spot on the rock!
