July 2007 Mystery Photo Revealed

Thanks everybody for your guesses. Unfortunately, no one figured out this month’s Mystery Photo animal.

The creature in the photo was a California Sea Lion. Their Latin name, Zalophus californianus literally means “California bighead” which derives from the large bump that adult males have on their heads (I can think of some other California bigheads…).

I wish it had been a manatee, because I have yet to see one in my life.
