Road Wise: Perception

Filed under: Road Wise by Erin on 6/1/2007

There are two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way. The older fish nodded at them and said, “Good morning boys, how’s the water?” The two young fish swim on for a bit, then one looked over at the other and said, “What the hell is water?”

I can’t remember where I came across this gem of a quote by David Foster Wallace last month… I do remember that it impressed me so much that I reread it several times. The first time through it seemed humorous, by the next read it seemed deep, and now I think it is pure genius in its simplicity.

What is “Road Wise?” At the beginning of every month we will share a thought provoking (if sometimes silly) quote with you. We may draw from a variety of sources (signs, brochures or conversations), but they will all have one thing in common—they entered our lives because we are on the road.

Isn’t that like us asking how’s the air?

Exactly! I think the point is that some of the most obvious things are overlooked or taken for granted. Its all about perspective…

Very deep and simple, Erin. Love it! And loved our time together last nite. Hope this rain isn’t dampening your time here too much… :-)
