February 2007 Mystery Photo Revealed
The Mystery Photo for this month was an American Alligator. Erin took the photograph in December, 2007 during our visit to the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge.
Congratulations to Aaron for the first correct answer!
This alligator, like all ‘gators, lives in fresh water. Crocodiles, on the other hand, prefer salt water. So, if you’re ever snatched by one of these creatures and it thrashes you around in the water, remember this: if the water is salty, you know it’s a crocodile and if the water is fresh you know it’s a ‘gator. Of course, either way you’re in trouble…
While on a tour in a Louisiana bayou a few years ago, we were told that each inch between the gator’s snout and brow ridge translates to roughly one foot in length. So that puts this specimen at 6 feet long or so.
Thanks to everyone for playing, and best of luck to you for next month’s Mystery Photo. I’m sure Erin has a good one picked out already.
