Filling Water in Villablino

Filed under: Travel & Video by Lance on 5/31/2006

This movie is from Villablino in northern Spain. The area is supplied with spring water, and many locals drink it instead of the the tap water. This is the same water, just not treated by the city with chlorine.

When we visited my parents Tom and Libby in Villablino this spring, we went with them to [...]

First Videos from Europe

Filed under: Travel & Video by Lance on 5/29/2006

One perquisite of traveling with a Canon SD400 Digital Elph-besides that fact that it is a very lightweight digital camera-is that one is able to take short films with it. On our recent trip around Europe, we found this out by accident when taking some pictures and hitting the wrong button on the back of [...]

Alicante and the Costa Blanca

Filed under: Travel by Lance on 5/25/2006

Our train from Barcelona to Alicante was tight, crowded, and late. So, unfortunately we weren’t in a great mood when we reached the bright city on Spain’s Costa Blanca. This stretch of Mediterranean coastline is lined with beautiful beaches and picturesque towns. As much as we were looking forward to the water, sand, and sun, [...]

Birthday in Barcelona

Filed under: Travel by Lance on

Known for soccer, modernist architecture, and staunch cultural autonomy, Barcelona is an amazing city in northeast Spain. We only had one day to explore it, which is not nearly enough. We started our day on Sunday at the Museu Picasso. Housed in a beautiful old building, the museum traces the artist’s development from his earliest [...]

Travel from Marseilles to Barcelona

Filed under: Travel by Lance on 5/20/2006

Our last day in Aix was Saturday. We left late enough in the morning that we were able to shop at the farmer’s market downtown. The whole plaza is filled with fresh fruit and vegetable vendors, flowers, wine, cheese, etc. Across from the food stalls are bric à brac vendors selling everything from antique books [...]

Détente in Aix

Filed under: Travel by Lance on 5/17/2006

For Thursday and Friday in Aix, our plan was to do…not much. Thursday we slept in, and worked for a bit online since we had a nice wireless connection available. For the afternoon, we planned a hike to nearby Mont Ste-Victoire. Made famous by Paul Cézanne, the mountain offers splendid views of the area around [...]

Travel to Aix

Filed under: Travel by Lance on 5/13/2006

Another beautiful day in Provence! We left Avignon around 10 AM, and hopped on the TGV for the 15 minute ride to Aix-en-Provence. It’s really weird taking a high speed train for such a short distance (about 90 km), but it’s the cheapest (and fastest!) option.

Once in Aix we lunched at an outside table [...]

Avignon

Filed under: Travel by Lance on 5/10/2006

Today dawned sunny and beautiful, a nice change from yesterday’s soaking rain. We set out to explore the beautiful city of Avignon.

Avignon is an old city located on the Rhône river in southern France, inhabited since Neolithic times. It was once a Roman city and then an important trading center when the border of [...]

TGV to Avignon

Filed under: Travel by Lance on

France was one of the first countries to install high-speed train lines; they put in tracks between major cities as early as 1981. We are lucky enough today to take a TGV (Trains à Grande Vitesse)[1] from Paris to Avignon, a city in southern France in the Provence region. As I type this we are [...]

Paris, Day 3

Filed under: Travel by Lance on

When you think of world-class museums, you must think of the Musée du Louvre. Included in its collections are such memorable pieces as Venus de Milo, Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, and the Hammurabi Code stele. The museum is really more like 20 museums housed in one place! You could go with a very specific goal [...]

Paris, Day 2

Filed under: Travel by Lance on 5/9/2006

(View our Paris photos.)

Today, Saturday, dawned cloudy and cold. We slept in a bit, then took the Metro down to the Musée d’Orsay. Known for its Impressionist and post-Impressionist masterpieces, this beautiful museum is housed inside a former train station. It’s quite an impressive place, and has lots of great sculpture, paintings, and photographs on [...]

(View our Paris photos.)

We dropped our bags at our hotel, home for the next 3 nights, in the 17ème Arrondissement1, and headed over to the Eiffel Tower. Paris’ subway system, simply known as Metro, is efficient and easy to navigate. Since we are going to be in town for a few days, we purchased a [...]

Funny Quote

Filed under: Travel by Lance on 5/7/2006

Funny quote found on a hostel t-shirt in Rome, Italy:

“Heaven is:
Where the police are British,
The cooks are Spanish,
The mechanics German,
The lovers Italian,
And it is all organized by the Swiss.

Hell is:
Where the cooks are British,
The mechanics are Spanish, [...]

Travel to Milan and Paris

Filed under: Travel by Lance on 5/6/2006

Today we spent the whole day on the train, and thus ended 10 great days in Italy. Our plan is to spend 10 days in each country (Italy, France, and Spain), and so far it is working out well.

We left Florence mid-morning and had a nice ride to Milan, the financial and fashion capital of [...]

Day in Siena

Filed under: Travel by Erin on 5/5/2006

The hour and a half long bus ride to Siena wound through lush green valleys and under walled cities perched high atop hills. We took the “slow” bus, since it’s cheaper and scenic. It turned out well since we got to see a few Italian towns that we wouldn’t have seen otherwise.

Siena was [...]

Florence, Day 2

Filed under: Travel by Lance on 5/4/2006

Today was an early start since we wanted to get out into Florence before the tourist throngs mobbed the popular areas. Our destination was Chiesa Santa Croce (Church of the Holy Cross). It’s the largest Franciscan church in the world, and sports a gothic pink, green and white marble façade. The rest of the building [...]

Small Town in Tuscany

Filed under: Travel by Lance on 5/2/2006

Today, April 30th, we slept in for the first time in a few weeks. After a splendid breakfast laid out by our hostess Anunzia, we spent the morning reading books, writing in our journals, and just plain relaxing.

Around 11:00 AM we left to walk into town; it’s about a 10 minute walk through vineyards, country [...]
