El Barrio de Tucson

Filed under: Images by Lance on 12/18/2004

One of the coolest things about living in Tucson, Arizona is its rich Mexican heritage. The best place in town to see this influence first-hand is in the old neighborhoods that formed the city’s core residential district several hundred years ago. Known collectively as “El Barrio” (which is Spanish for neighborhood), this part of town is beautiful, interesting, and very accessible. We are drawn to it not only because of it’s deep history and cultural value, but also that many original houses that have been beautifully restored.

The best way to see it is by foot or bicycle on a nice Tucson-style sunny day. Erin and I took a stroll through the Barrio last weekend, starting from Cushing Street just south of the Tucson Convention Center. We took several side streets, and basically did a big circle of the various old neighborhoods. It was fun! See the pictures we took on our walk through El Barrio.
